REAL LIFE – REAL FAITH

40 Days of Getting It Together – a Fall Study for Our Church

September 14 – October 26

This 40-day study is based on an exciting short movie series produced by Nooma Films.  The theme of each week will be introduced in Sunday worship with small-group discussions held at various times throughout the week.  This will be supported by short daily Bible readings.
Three main components of this study:
~Worship (6 Sundays)
~Small Group Discussion (6 meetings)
~Daily Bible Reading (40 days)
We will be wrestling with questions like:
~Does God love us even in our failure?
~Why do bad things happen to us?
~What does Jesus teach us about grief?
~Does it matter what others think about us?
~Does God answer prayer?
~Can "things" make us happy?
We hope that everyone finds this time of reflection and interaction vital to their spiritual journey.

‘TWAS THE DAY AFTER VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

‘Twas the day after Bible school and all over town,
With a sigh of relief, we all settled down.
Out to the golf course goes Dad in his cap,
And home in the bedroom Mom’s taking a nap.
Gone Linda, gone Brenda, gone David and Johnny,
Gone Margie, and Mary, and Ronnie and Donnie.
Gone stories, and puppets, and songs in the air,
Gone paint under fingernails and paste in the hair.
Rest sweetly, dear workers, and wake with good cheer,
For Bible school won’t come again for a year.
As they drifted off, I heard them exclaim:
“It was worth all the hard work and we’d do it again!”

A little boy opened the big family Bible.  He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages.  Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible.  He picked up the object and looked at it.  What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.  “Mama, look what I found,” the boy called out.  “What have you got there, dear?”  With astonishment in the young boy’s voice, he answered, “I think it’s Adam’s underwear!”

AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE
John Adams, who became America’s second president, was so elated when the United States was about to celebrate independence from England that he wrote”
“It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.  It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward, forevermore.”

ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM
Because many Americans have never known other circumstances, it’s easy to take our liberties for granted.  The Israelites knew firsthand the oppression of slavery.  Yet when God finally led them out of Egypt, they had problems adjusting to their newfound freedom.  Fearful and rebellious, the Israelites grumbled against their leaders, Moses and Aaron, saying they would’ve been better off as slaves in Egypt.
Our freedom as Christians cost Jesus his life.  But we, too, often find it easier to fall back into sinful habits.  In Galatians 5:1, Paul offers this encouragement: “For freedom Christ has set us free.  Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (NRSV).
We’re no longer bound by sin and death.  That “independence” is worth celebrating every day!

COMMUNION TABLE FLOWERS
July 6 and July 20 are some the dates available if you are interested in providing flowers in memory of or in honor of someone.  Another way to remember or honor your loved one is to help sponsor students at the Congo Seminary in Mulunguishi, Africa. Our congregation has been supporting this vital mission ministry for a few years.  The cost is $15.00 per Sunday and the name(s) of the ones being honored or memorialized will be printed in the Bulletin for the Sunday of your choice.  If you choose to have fresh flowers, please feel free to take the flower arrangement home with you after the 2nd service.  Please call the church office (463-4305) if you would like to participate in this ministry.

CONFIRMATION CAMP
The following kids will be kicking off their year-long adventure in their Confirmation experience by heading to camp at Wesley Woods today. They will be figuring out who Christ is in their personal discipleship journey when at times it may seem pretty much impossible!  They will do this through various types of activities such as music and worship, boating, swimming, crazy games, Bible study time, outdoor cooking, crafts and the list goes on!  Please keep them and the staff in your prayers!
